The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson

Brandon Sanderon’s titles feel like a cue to the very plot point that he has created through his epic fantasy novels. Making us question who exactly is The Hero of Ages? The Hero of Ages is the savior of all. This is prophesied by the Terris community. It is said that the hero would give up the power that they found at the Well of Ascension, keeping the Deepness from capturing the world and destroying it. Oh yea this force of destruction has a name. It’s name is Ruin.

Ruin is a mist spirit that is trying to help our favorite heroine with her faithful mentor/friend Sazed discover the truth among the twisted prophecy as Ruin keeps tempting Vin to keep the power at the Well of Ascension for herself when it deliberately went after her man, Elend. Even for a mist spirit of destruction that is an extremely low blow. Know how much Elend means to Vin she has literally no other choice but to save the one she loves most with the power she has discovered. Ahhh young love. It’s when she releases the power, believing in the prophecy, and in the power of Preservation itself, that the powerful force can actually create and not destroy. Okay, so what exactly does that mean? Elend Venture is a Mistborn baby! That’s right our favorite bookish rich boy is now a high-flying metal burner! Way to go Preservation!

Of course this makes Ruin extremely please. No it doesn’t Ruin is actually quite upset by this. Ruin wants to destroy everything, and I mean everything. This destructive spirit does not need to be free right now but free it is. Ruin focuses most of it’s energy in the last days of the worlds decay, while being an excellent multitasked and influencing people under his control through the happy Kolos Army.  The world is literally about to be destroyed while Vin and Elend try their hardest to not only save their home but the people they are ruling under.

Thankfully The Lord Ruler foreseen this even creating secret storage units that contain food, water and other beneficial items for the citizens to survive off of. Also in each storage unit are closed that Vin tries to peace together to better understand what exactly is going on and who exactly is Ruin.

The battle between Ruin and Vin needs to be made into a movie! That scene is amazing, yet heartbreaking at the very same time.

Meanwhile Sazed our sweet intelligent Terrismen is struggling to find peace when his love interest has passed away during the armies attacks. He finds comfort in going through all his religious studies to find peace on where do the souls of the lost go, only to discovery all the benefits he studies do not support his heartache. Sazed also takes moments throughout the journey to reflect on what happening to the world they live on as well as what the prophecy means.

“Though the power he held seemed immense to him, it was truly only a tiny fraction of something much greater.”

“This was a power that would take millennia to understand. Remaking the world would have been easy, had one been familiar with the power. Yet, I realized the danger inherent in my ignorance. Like a child suddenly given awesome strength, I could have pushed too hard”.

Hmmm I wonder who that could be?

I wonder!

Majority of this The Mistborn 3: Heros of Ages did focus on Elend & Vin but we also were able to know more about Spooks. He becomes a very important character in the grand scheme of things. This makes me extremely happy because that ending left me in the feels!

About Brandon Sanderson

Brandon Sanderson was born in 1975 in Lincoln, Nebraska. As a child Brandon enjoyed reading, but he lost interest in the types of titles often suggested to him, and by junior high he never cracked a book if he could help it. This changed when an eighth grade teacher gave him Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly.
